In May 2016, a new Digital Elevation Model (DEM) called ALOS-DEM was made available by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). With a resolution of 30 m the ALOS-DEM bring valuable information over remote regions. The ALOS-DEM is assessed for the first time and over the South American Andean Plateau considering both vertical and relative accuracy. Assessment is done at both the regional scale and considering different slopes classes. A total of 160 000 ICESat altimeter points are used as reference data. For comparison the recently released SRTM-GL1 is also considered. The relative error is generally neglected in DEMs assessment due to lack of accurate reference data. Here we used a new recent methodology based on ICESat data to assess the relative error of the DEMs considering quantitative and categorical statistics. Finally, the hydrological networks derived from the DEMs are compared to a reference hydrological network derived from Google-Earth to assess DEM potentials in hydrological application. The ALOS-DEM is found to be more accurate than SRTM-GL1 considering vertical accuracy, relative accuracy and hydrological application over the region.
